How to Maintain a Mosquito-Free Yard

How to Maintain a Mosquito-Free Yard

There are several reasons why keeping mosquitoes away from your yard this summer is important, from your personal comfort to the health of various trees or plants on the property. If mosquitoes have been an issue in your yard in the past, or even if you’re just looking to proactively prevent them from becoming a problem, how should you proceed?

At Logan Extermination, we’re happy to assist with this and many other forms of yard care, including things like tree spraying and insecticide treatments if needed. Here are some simple tips on how to keep your yard free of mosquitoes, plus a word on why simple watering often isn’t quite enough to get the job done here.

Watering — But Avoiding Standing Water

Watering is important for keeping your yard green and healthy, but you also need to be aware of the fact that standing water is one of the primary breeding grounds for mosquitoes. As such, it’s important to avoid puddles or small ponds of water that can form in depressions or other areas around your property.

If you do have standing water on your property that can’t be removed, you can take steps to help prevent mosquitoes from breeding in it. This includes things like adding mosquito dunks (which release a bacteria that’s lethal to mosquito larvae) or installing a fountain or aerator to keep the water moving.

Keeping Grass Cut

As we noted above, simple watering often won’t be enough to keep your yard free of mosquitoes. You also need to take steps like keeping the grass cut, as taller grasses provide ideal hiding spots for these pests. This is especially important if you live in an area with a lot of trees, as mosquitoes will often rest in the shade during the day before emerging to bite at dusk.

Utilizing Fans

For those who have mosquito issues around their porch or patio, one simple solution is to utilize fans. Mosquitoes are relatively weak flyers, and even a gentle breeze can deter them from entering an area. If you don’t have any fans handy, you can also open doors or windows to create a cross-breeze that will do the trick.

Spraying Considerations

Especially if you’ve had problems with mosquitoes in the past, you may want to consider having your yard sprayed with an insecticide. This can help to keep the mosquito population down, but it’s important to work with a professional to ensure that the right products are being used. This is especially true if you have pets or small children, as some insecticides can be harmful if not used properly.
